I can’t believe I won the raffle to become the sponsor on the front of the home shirt for this season. I’d like to thank my mum and dad, my wife and of course my dog. Without their support none of this would be possible. I’d also like to thank the club for being so welcoming and open to me. I’m going to have to let this sink in for a few days, I won’t let it go to my head though and will return next season the same old me.......... Actually it’s quite a thing to have won. Rather than putting my Supporters club www.berwickranger.co.uk on the front I’ve asked www.northernsoulkitchen.co.uk of Berwick if they would like it and they were delighted to accept. They are a community kitchen opening up in Berwick in the next couple of months. It’s a good initiative and I’m happy to support them.    Here’s a brief description of what they are about but please visit their website for more information. Northern Soul Kitchen are opening a collaborative community space in which we take unsold, yet edible food from supermarkets, local shops and households to create affordable and balanced meals for all. The food is offered on a Pay-As-You-Feel (PAYF) basis meaning people can pay what they think the food is worth, donate whatever amount they can afford or even volunteer their time and skills to pay for a meal - all have their value. In this way, the café will be a place for everyone. We think everyone should have access to healthy food and a friendly environment in which to enjoy it. We will also be offering workshops where people can learn more about reducing food waste in their own homes and how to get the most out of shopping on a budget. In this way, we will empower and educate people within the community to reduce their own food waste and help to destigmatise intercepted food. We want this space to be a community hub for statutory and third sector organisations where they can achieve their own aims and objectives. So, our café will tackle the following issues: - food waste in the local area - food poverty and instability - social isolation and integration - a lack of understanding about food and nutrition     The draw has just been made and Berwick are in group F with Hamilton, Livingston, Airdrie and Annan. It’s a tough group and I think the best we can hope for is to finish 4th above Annan. I will try to get to all the games as I have done in the past. I’m hoping for Annan at Shielfield but happy to travel to the rest. I’ve never been to Hamilton’s ground despite going to Bell college of Technology (in Hamilton) for the first year of my Degree before going to Strathclyde. Bell college had some very expensive equipment that we had to work with for the first year funded by some joint European grant with Strathclyde. I can’t remember what it was though! I also fancy a trip to Livingston. I I lived there when I was young and went to primary school there and then returned for my final year of high school when they built a new school and a football stadium next door. To tie it in my first “real job” was in Airdrie repairing mobile phones for Motorola. The fixtures still have to be announced after they have decided which games will be on tv. Still I’m looking forward to it and I’ll drag my dad along too and no doubt my brother will tag along for a game or two and Gordon might be persuaded to come as well.  |
